Canonical incident record

At 14:22 EST on June 18, 1993, the Sector 7 carrier-wave reactor entered critical resonance. The event did not destroy the facility in any conventional sense. Sector 7 ceased to persist as ordinary matter and survived as an addressable spatial lattice: steel, concrete, equipment, and personnel became coordinates in a monospaced signal environment.

The same resonance ruptured the dimensional boundary around the reactor chamber. The resulting breach, designated RIFT-01, does not open onto one named place. It samples multiple exterior realities and allows fragments of incompatible spaces, organisms, memories, and physical laws to overlap Sector 7 wherever the lattice becomes unstable.

These facts govern all field records:

  • Staff transponders still answer from inside the lattice, but Liminal cannot prove whether any organic personnel survived or whether the responding signals are copies.
  • Project T-Link began as a one-way remote neural projection system. After the incident the bridge became bidirectional: sensations, injuries, and foreign memories encountered inside Sector 7 can write back into an Operator's neural pattern.
  • SANITY is the interface label for identity coherence—the percentage of the Operator's original neural checksum the bridge can still verify.
  • At zero coherence the system reports PURGED. Whether this represents death, erasure, displacement, or assimilation remains unknown.
  • The flashlight is a carrier-wave transmitter. Light stabilizes perception but broadcasts the Operator's position; darkness conceals the carrier while accelerating identity loss.
  • Transmit Nodes constrain the breach's local coordinates. Synchronizing them temporarily restores a navigable extraction route.
  • RIFT-01 is expanding inward. Containment is no longer only about keeping intruders out. Sector 7 must be prevented from stabilizing into an exit.

Liminal

Liminal does not name the phenomenon it was founded to hold. Company practice is to name the state a site enters rather than the thing producing it, and the corporate name is that euphemism, adopted upward until it became the letterhead. Personnel are advised that this is deliberate. A thing that is named can be asked about.

The Sector 7 installation was not built and then compromised. The site was selected. The lowest level is the original works — a single containment ring poured directly around the sampling point, small, unlit, and older than every drawing that references it. Each subsequent expansion was added above the last, wider and further from the ring, until the uppermost levels held administration, records, and personnel who had never been below Grade 3.

The building is therefore read downward as a history and upward as a defence. Depth correlates with age, with proximity to RIFT-01, and with lattice instability. The Containment Sciences Division has repeatedly declined to publish the original survey.

Neural insertion places an operative at the ring, so a containment run is a climb. Floor 1 is the original works and each floor above it is one layer further from RIFT-01 and one more layer of a defence built to stop anything below from rising. This is why threat pressure increases with the floor number rather than decreasing: the operative is what the upper grades were hardened against.

The canonical incident record above states that the June 18 resonance ruptured the dimensional boundary. That remains the issued account.

Direct organic entry into the Sector 7 lattice is impossible. Operators remain outside the incident zone and project an encoded neural image through the T-Link bridge. The visible suit is not conventional armor; it is a checksum of identity, intent, and surviving body telemetry.

Every returned sensation is treated as untrusted data. Operators must not answer voices using their callsign unless the source is authenticated on the live channel. The SEC-7 black-box archive contains handshakes with no registered Operator, files timestamped before T-Link existed, and signals that continue after disconnection.

2. Containment loop

  1. Locate the required Transmit Nodes.
  2. Phase through sealed bulkheads where necessary.
  3. Hold E beside each Node until calibration reaches 100 percent.
  4. Use support CRTs for stabilization, radar sweeps, and field resources.
  5. Complete any evidence or passcode requirements imposed by the active protocol.
  6. Enter the released ladder or extraction hatch before the link collapses.

Transmit Nodes do not close RIFT-01. They force the surrounding lattice to agree on one local arrangement long enough for Liminal to establish an exit. Every calibrated Node narrows the breach locally while increasing stress elsewhere in Sector 7.

Phase states

  • Stable Reality: physical barriers remain coherent and lighting is stronger. Phase-shift energy bleeds away here, slowly, and not at all until the operative has moved clear of the insertion point.
  • ASCII Void: selected barriers lose collision and visual noise increases. Phase-shift energy recovers in the Void, and recovers faster within reach of a Transmit Node. The Void is where the charge is made; the cost of returning to Stable Reality is paid on the way out of it.
  • Black Annex: a captive sub-space maintained by the Warden. Normal phasing and flashlight operation are unavailable.

3. Threat taxonomy

Sector 7 threats are classified by origin rather than by assumed species.

  • ANOM: reactor-generated or reactor-transformed signal life.
  • S-DRN: surviving Agency hardware operating under corrupted directives.
  • EXT: organisms or intelligences entering through RIFT-01.
  • ECHO: residual Operator-pattern phenomena of uncertain personhood.

Six active threats have been confirmed in normal Sector 7 corridors. A seventh phenomenon is confined to the Black Annex.

ANOM-01 — Red Static

Origin: Reactor-generated waveform organism. Recognition: Articulated red carapace, luminous aperture, heavy signal distortion. Behavior: Red Static is observation-reactive. Direct Operator observation slows its waveform to a crawl; when unobserved it unfolds and advances at high speed. Protocol: Face it while withdrawing. Do not turn away without a clear route or obstruction.

The Agency cannot determine whether ANOM-01 was created during the incident or whether a living subject was rewritten into a form the lattice could preserve.

S-DRN-02 — Stalker

Origin: Corrupted pre-incident Sentinel drone. Recognition: Industrial suspension frame, amber targeting optic, capture clamps. Behavior: The Stalker ignores observation. It patrols until line-of-sight or a strong carrier trace is acquired, then commits to pursuit. Protocol: Break line-of-sight, reduce your carrier signature, and use branching corridors. Looking at it provides no protection.

The drone's surviving command stack still identifies Operators as containment failures. No remote shutdown credential has been accepted since the incident.

EXT-03 — The Mourner

Origin: External biological humanoid admitted through RIFT-01. Recognition: Tall, pale, emaciated frame; withdrawn posture; persistent sobbing. Behavior: The Mourner wanders slowly while unrecognized. Centering its face inside the T-Link acquisition cone completes an involuntary recognition handshake. It becomes agitated for approximately 3.5 seconds, then pursues the recognizing Operator at extreme speed for approximately 15 seconds. Protocol: Do not inspect its face. Keep its head outside the center of view. If recognition occurs, use the agitation interval to gain distance and place multiple corners between you and the entity.

The Mourner does not react to ordinary light alone. It reacts when the neural bridge resolves its face as an identity. Field recordings suggest its distress begins before the Operator consciously recognizes it.

EXT-04 — The Warden

Origin: External phasing humanoid admitted through RIFT-01. Recognition: Corroded silhouette, asymmetric gait, localized material decay. Behavior: The Warden senses Operators at close range, phases through solid matter during pursuit, and leaves corrosion in occupied cells. Direct contact transfers the Operator into the Black Annex. Protocol: Create distance before it begins pursuit. Walls will not stop it. If captured, preserve UPLINK stability and locate the Escape Node.

The Black Annex

The Black Annex is a dark 20-by-20 prison-space whose walls reconfigure every five seconds. The Operator's flashlight is disabled, phasing is refused outright — the Fold is off the lattice and has no Void behind it — and UPLINK replaces normal coherence telemetry. If UPLINK reaches zero, the Agency loses the projection. Touching the Escape Node forces a return to Sector 7.

The Fold appears to be carried by the Warden rather than anchored to one external reality. Recovered geometry contains fragments of multiple Sector 7 rooms that were never physically adjacent.

EXT-05 — The Specter

Origin: Unresolved external organism admitted through RIFT-01. Recognition: Violet discontinuity, partial limbs, intermittent silhouette. Behavior: The Specter cannot fully resolve under normal observation. It becomes most visible at close range or while the flashlight is off, and stalks more aggressively through darkness. Direct flashlight illumination within effective range collapses its local waveform and displaces it to a distant coordinate. Protocol: Sweep dark corridors deliberately. Hold the flashlight on the Specter until displacement is confirmed, then move before it finds another route into the lattice.

The Specter is not a variant of Red Static. Similar sensor noise reflects the lattice's inability to encode either organism cleanly, not a shared origin.

EXT-06 — The Banshee

Origin: External acoustic-resonance organism admitted through RIFT-01. Recognition: Suspended pale figure, cold-blue emission, low carrier hum. Behavior: The Banshee remains docile until directly illuminated by the Operator's flashlight. Illumination triggers a two-second signal cascade followed by an eight-second high-speed pursuit. Protocol: Keep the beam off its body. If disturbed, break line-of-sight during the cascade and remain behind cover until the pursuit interval expires.

The Banshee is not related to the Mourner. Their similar silhouettes are a projection artifact produced when T-Link attempts to render elongated external anatomy.

ECHO-07 — Lost Operator Echo

Origin: Residual neural patterns encountered inside the Black Annex. Recognition: Cyan Operator-shaped trace with incomplete suit telemetry. Behavior: Echoes wander without a confirmed attack response. Their signals interfere with identification systems and may reproduce fragments of archived movement or speech. Protocol: Do not follow, answer, or attempt synchronization. Continue toward the Escape Node.

Medical cannot determine whether Echoes are trapped Operators, discarded copies, memories stolen by the Warden, or bait assembled from the observer's own neural record. They remain classified as persons for recovery purposes.

4. Environmental threats

Cherenkov rifts

Localized cyan rupture fields mark coordinates where RIFT-01 is forcing incompatible space into the lattice. Proximity damages coherence and introduces false memories. These apertures are symptoms of the main breach, not independent destinations.

Electrical discharges

Damaged conduits and unstable reactor systems produce intermittent sparks. Discharges can damage the projected checksum and may reveal an Operator's position through sudden carrier noise.

Corrosion fields

The Warden's passage leaves cells whose material definition is being overwritten. Corrosion is both a navigation warning and evidence that solid barriers no longer constrain the entity.

Phase instability

Repeated transitions between Stable Reality and the ASCII Void stress local coordinates. Severe instability can admit an additional external threat into a previously cleared area.

5. Hardware and evidence

Transmit Nodes

Grid anchors that force nearby coordinates into temporary agreement. Nodes are commonly sealed behind Stable Reality bulkheads and must be reached through the ASCII Void. Full calibration releases the associated door.

Data Cores and classified records

Data Cores contain recoverable reactor-state fragments used by Endless extraction quotas. Classified records and evidence terminals preserve incident chronology, passcode fragments, and contradictory witness accounts. A corrupted black box may impose additional risk when read.

Extraction gates

Ladders transfer the projection between intermediate sectors. The final bulkhead hatch returns the active neural pattern to the Agency receiver. An open gate is a temporary coordinate agreement, not proof that the surrounding sector is safe.

  • Capacity Cell S-93: increases flashlight capacity.
  • Neural Stabilization Dampener: slows identity-coherence decay.
  • Overclocked Locomotion Thrusters: increases movement speed.
  • Radar Scan Array: extends hostile-contact reveal duration.
  • Sub-space Signal Decoy: adds deployable carrier-signature charges.
  • Auto-Cryptography Decryptor: removes false passcode candidates.
  • Suit Shield Armor: improves protection from hostile contact.
  • Cognitive Psy-Shield Matrix: increases maximum Aegis capacity.

Upgrades improve survival probability. They do not make the returned neural record trustworthy.

8. Final containment order

RIFT-01 has no confirmed destination, ecology, or opposite shore. Treat every new corridor as an overlap, every unknown voice as an intrusion, and every familiar memory as potentially foreign.

Synchronize the Nodes. Recover what the lattice still remembers. Do not let Sector 7 become an exit.
